From Michael Yu - Boeing 747 Pilot - Cathay Pacific Airways

When asked if I always wanted to fly, I do have to answer...not until recently. When I was in school I never thought that I could make a career out of flying. I had always wondered how such a large piece of metal could be lifted into the air, but I never really thought I could be a pilot. Flying wasn't a university subject.

During my master's degree in engineering, I began flying and I was hooked! Not only did I enjoy being in the air with the sense of freedom it gave me, but I enjoyed the challenge of becoming a good pilot. The skills were different from those required for university: multitasking, hand-eye-mouth coordination, scan rates, safety, etc. It was not until halfway through my PPL that I found I could try for the Cadet Pilot Program with Cathay Pacific. This was a big change from the civil engineering career I had planned!

When I began my initial flight training, I researched the schools at the Boundary Bay Airport. Programs and prices were pretty competitive, but Montair's aircraft were the winners! Condition and safety were my main concerns. The 'family like' culture at Montair was a plus.

My flight training at Montair was good and the ground school was thorough. What benefited me the most was the patience and enthusiasm of the instructors. This created a lot of interest and motivation for me. The PPL programs were pretty much standard across the lower mainland, but the extras the Montair staff gave me were bonuses.

I began the Cadet Pilot Program with Cathay Pacific, not requiring any flight training experience. During 14 months in Adelaide, South Australia, I flew the Grob 115, Tobago and Duchess. With that HKCPL level obtained, I also did a frozen ATPL in 5 weeks' time. Next was jet conversion training on a modified B737. When I returned to Hong Kong I was given a brief introduction to the company, a tour and safety training. I was then converted onto the B747-400.

Now I fly as a Second Officer. For the first 3 years I will be flying to long haul destinations in Europe, Australia, and North America. Life is great!
